The Derbyshire Wayfarer is a one day travel ticket enabling the purchaser to travel anywhere in Derbyshire by train or bus. For the over 60's it is particularly good value at £6.50, although it costs £13 for youngsters.
You can see from the map below that some places just outside the Derbyshire County Boundary, are included, so you can get to Sheffield by train, which gives access to the Hope Valley Line for Grindleford, Bamford. Hope, Edale and New Mills, the latter having two train stations (Central and Newtown) which are about 1 mile apart. This gives the option to travel to Buxton by train, and from there you can cycle back to Derby by either of two routes - via NCN 68 (the Peninne Cycle Way) - mostly off road and downhill via the Tissington Trail, or cycle from Buxton Station to Wyedale, follow the Monsal Trail to Bakewell, cycle on road from there to Rowsley and thence to Matlock on the White Peak Link, where you can take the train back to Derby.
Apart from trips within the above parameters, the Wayfarer ticket is useful as a a reduced cost part of longer journeys. For instance I recently traveled to Barnsley via Doncaster and back for a mere
£11.55
Cost breakdown as follows:
Wayfarer ticket to Sheffield £6.50
Single Sheffield to Doncaster £2.20
Cycle Doncaster to Barnsley 22 miles Free
Single Barnsley to Sheffield £2.85
Sheffield back to Derby on the Wayfarer
You can buy Wayfarer tickets at railway stations, tourist offices, libraries and on the train itself. No point in buying before the day of travel so you can check the weather forecast before you leave home on the day.
Another advantage is that you can travel on any train after 9am so you are not committed to specific times as you might be with a regular ticket.
With a folding bike that you can take on buses, the options are even greater. giving access to such places as Leek, Macclesfield, Swadlincote and even Holmfirth,
